He was there. Alive. In the streets. Working. I saw him. I did. And there was a little Keith Haring shop… near Mulberry or Elizabeth Street. I have his coloring book and watch. He was brave, you know. Outward, yet modest. And brave. There are a lot of people like that who I didn’t exactly “meet” but witnessed in real time, including Andy Warhol (+ David Byrne; Laurie Anderson; Woody Allen—who I actually spoke with).

i like performance art more after the fact. when its been photographed or filmed. i know i sound narrow minded its just for me i always felt like life is a performance piece. so designating a time and space to show that you’re human well that part feels weird to me. but who knows maybe one day i will be like my fellow country mate marina abramovic or maybe not. i am not dismissing any performance art and i actually do enjoy marinas work.

Happy 100th, John Cage! Cage made his first headline visit to the Walker in 1964 (as musical advisor to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) and he would return with Cunningham many times over the next 25 years in a variety of incarnations, including four artist residencies.

Cage created his own instrumentation to fit the precise needs of his compositions. He viewed all sounds as legitimate musical territory. In his quest to locate a music that held no fixed meaning but would elucidate the oneness of everyday life and art, he embraced the use of silence as sound in formal composition (as in his classic 4’33”).

Centennial celebration events are happening all over the country and internationally. Check out the list here (and take a moment to enjoy the photo of Cage in a birthday hat and send a birthday wish).

Looking at these photographs, perhaps particularly the second, I can feel myself doing “the 6’s”. Anyone who knows Cunningham technique knows what I’m talking about both when I mention “the 6’s” but also what it means to feel yourself marking out a movement mentally… to the point that you can feel yourself doing it physically…or fully anticipate the feeling of doing it physically. The mind/body connection is intense. I credit modern dance with teaching me what it means to fully enter deep focus.
