il cubo [in cube], 1966
Luciano Fabro
“It is an air chamber conceived to measure the single individual, in which man is the only yardstick for the portion of space which he occupies, as shown by a photographic sequence which depicts the artist intent on verifying the dimensions and properties of his cube. By measuring the space through the extension of his body and exploring the richness of physical and sensory variations it offers, simple actions enable him to rediscover the basis for a behavior which is also a form of inner coordination, in some way spontaneous and unconscious…

Eva Hesse, c. 1959 (Photo by Stephen Korbet)

I will never forget her solo exhibition at Yale, 1992. I was, amazingly, the only person in the gallery, other than staff. I was overwhelmed. The work practically breathes. I remember coming close to tears. It was one of those pivotal moments for me. Her recent show at ICA (Boston) was nice. And also her paintings (Brooklyn Museum) last year were very refreshing. She is well represented in my library.
